Seed
The seed has been a constant subject of discussion on Oldfag.org. There has been three different overworld seeds, with multiple structure seed changes aswell, all changed by the server owner, John200410, thanks to the seed cracking ability/affiliation of TAEFED.
Because of seed changes, and the structure seeds differing from the terrain seed, you can constantly find chunk errors spread across the map. This is the reason you find misaligned chunk borders, and structures in biomes and places that they shouldn't be (e.g witch huts in a mesa biome or an ocean monument under a mountain)
History (2019)[edit | edit source]
The main key player in the cracking of Oldfag's seeds is a seed cracker who went by the alias "Neil" on discord. Only TAEFED and some of the Meerkats had direct connections to Neil, but it's not even known if he was affiliated with Oldfag or played on it. Another important distinction is that between the terrain seed, and the structure seeds. The terrain seed governs terrain generation, and some structures. The structure seeds govern the placement of specific structures- villages, monuments, biome features, and slime chunks. Typically, it would never be necessary to find the separate structure seeds, but John had a specific plugin that could let him customize the structure seeds.
The original terrain seed lasted for about a month and a half, from June 24th to August 9th. This first seed was cracked by Neil who supplied it to the Meerkats (who would then give it to Exodus) and later TAEFED. When it was first cracked, John opted to change the structure seeds on July 20th, but these were discovered just the same.
On August 9th, John changed the seed to Oldfag's second seed. Quickly, many of the people unaware of this change started buzzing about "chunk errors", of which there were no doubt many. All new chunks were replaced with this second seed. Somewhere around this point, TAEFED managed to get Neil to cut his ties with the Meerkats, and Neil and TAEFED cracked the seed. This seed would last for a fairly short time, and with such a small percentage of chunks, generally forgotten.
On August 13th, after TAEFED leaked that he knew the seed, John changed the seed yet again, with a new plugin to randomize the end pillars, believing this to be how it was cracked. TAEFED would still crack the seed, with minimal help from Neil. For a short period of time, only TAEFED and his basemates knew the seed. John, the Meerkats, and everyone else was totally ignorant, believing the seed cracking to be over after the plugin supposedly stopped it. However, just a week or so later, TAEFED's basemate, fie_nd, would betray him to join the Meerkats. Immediately, the Meerkats and John knew TAEFED had cracked the seed, and knew what it was. However, after changing it so many times, John was reluctant, and vowed that it would never change again.
In Late August, TAEFED would leak the seed to the oldfag subreddit, handing it to the public. Since August 13th, despite being passed around and eventually leaked, the seed, -1985258164, remains. Yet, this seed only applies to Overworld, and some time in September, John changed the End and Nether seeds, unknown if they were cracked or not.
History (2020)[edit | edit source]
In May 2020 John held a vote to consider changing the seed for dungeon loot, to make Egap finders useless. The vote lost by 57:38.
History (2023)[edit | edit source]
Though for many long years the structure seeds, end seed, and nether seed was unknown to the public, all three were somehow cracked by Namy_McNameface and probably his friends of Jewbase who proceeded to release them to the public on the reddit.
Some of this leak will be short lived however, as in the summer of 2023 John200410 plans to update the server to 1.19, already adding 1.19 compatibility. By then the complete change of terrain may make a lot of the seeds obsolete.
